Chapter 12

All Willow wanted to do was fall into bed. She was exhausted. As they approached her house, she remembered Embry was there waiting for her. She rested her head against the back rest and sighed.

Steve patted her knee. “Everything is going to be okay.” He parked in her driveway then walked her to the front door.

She leaned into him. “Thank you for a wonderful dinner. And for clearing Clover.” The dog was running around the yard like she’d just been hyped up on sugar.

“You’re welcome.” He gently kissed her. “Straighten things out with Embry. Get some rest. Everything else will keep. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Yes, Doctor.”

He smiled then walked back to his truck.

Willow smelled chocolate. “Embry, I’m home.”

Her daughter walked out of her room with a towel on her head. “Hope you don’t mind, I took a shower. One of the guests spilled his drink all over me. I smelled like a brewery.”

Willow rushed to Embry and threw her arms around her. “I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too. I’m sorry, Mom.”

“It’s okay.” She pulled back and looked at her daughter. “It’s not easy growing up without a dad. I guess I’ve never looked at it from your perspective. If I had, maybe I would have been more understanding.”

Embry wiped the tears from her cheeks. “I do want a dad. But I don’t want a jerk for a dad. Why can’t he be normal?”

“Oh honey, I wish I had answers for you. For some reason, your father is only concerned about himself. When you become a mom or dad, your child becomes the most important person in your life. They are helpless and in need of you in every single way. Most parents get that. Some never do. I hate to say it but I think your father is in the latter group.”

All was forgiven. Both ladies curled up on the sofa with a plate of brownies. “You know me too well. Speaking of knowing me, did you fill Steve in on my favorite foods?” She took a big bite of the luscious chocolate treat.

Embry mumbled. “I might have given him a heads up on a few things.” She smiled, brownie crumbles stuck between her lips.

Willow grinned. “You did good.” She took a drink of her hot tea. “When are you and Marshall celebrating?”

“Monday night.” She swallowed more brownie. “ I have the night off. Last night and tonight was crazy busy at the restaurant. There’s no way I could have gotten off.” She took another brownie.

Both sat in a comfortable silence, enjoying their time together.

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“If dad’s such a bad guy, why did you marry him?”

Willow stared at the flames dancing in the fireplace. “I don’t know.”

“There must have been something that attracted you to him. Was it his good looks?”

Willow laughed. “Believe it or not, your father wasn’t that good looking when he was younger. Some men age better than others.”

“Then what was it?”

After a moment of recollecting, Willow answered. “I was a rescuer. Your father was a lost soul.
